What is Light Balance?
Light Balance is a newsletter about writing, photography, nature, travel, poetry, music, philosophy, spirituality, and generally how I balance the light within and without. In photography, to make an exposure, the camera’s light is balanced between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Not unlike how humans are balanced between mind, body and spirit. They, too, yearn to be exposed, to be seen. Through lenses of photography and writing and everything in between, this newsletter refracts what I see as I balance the light to observe and revel in this big, beautiful prismatic world. ♾️
Who Writes Light Balance?
That’s me! I’m Jessica M. Castillo, a writer and photographer based in Miami. I've been a reader and writer since I could first do both as a little girl growing up here in sunny (and stormy) South Florida, exhibiting my (award-winning!) first book in my town’s county youth fair when I was in third grade: a pop-up book about trees. I’ve been around cameras and photography my whole life through my dad and late grandfather, both big hobbyists. And I took my first course—a black and white film photography course—when I was 16.
